Unusual driving laws

There are so many strange and unusual driving laws from around the world. We’ve already shared some of our favourite weird driving rules from the UK, so now we’re looking further afield to see what other weird and wonderful things other countries don’t allow when you’re behind the wheel.

Japan

When you’re in Japan, make sure you’re paying extra attention when it’s raining. If you happen to splash a pedestrian as you drive by, it’s actually an offence.

Spain

If you’re driving around in Spain, make sure you keep your arms inside the window. Riding with an arm outside the vehicle could result in a big fine as it’s actually against the law. You could also be fined if you drive shirtless or while wearing flip flops.

Macedonia

It’s not enough to just be the designated driver in Macedonia, you have to make sure the passenger in the front seat next to you also must not be visibly under the influence of alcohol.

Switzerland

Travelling through Switzerland is so much fun! But, if you’re there for a while and want to make sure your car is clean, avoid giving it a wash on Sundays to stay on the right side of the law.

South Africa

South Africa is a very large place and there are lots of different laws governing it. But a law that you can count on to be consistent is to help protect the local wildlife. If you’re travelling on the road and you spot an animal, you legally have to slow down.

Denmark

It’s always a good idea to regularly check your car before you start driving. But, in Denmark it’s actually law to check for people underneath the vehicle before you get in and start your journey.

Thailand

No matter how hot it is, make sure you keep your clothes on when you’re driving in Thailand. If you take off so much as your shirt while behind the wheel, you could face a large fine.

America

There are lots of unusual driving laws in America, especially as each state governs their own laws. While there is large consistency over pivotal safety measures, there are a few state laws that we thought you’d enjoy.

In Florida, you’re very welcome to secure your goat, elephant, or alligator to a parking meter as long as you pay for time it’s “parked” there!

When in Missouri, make sure you only honk the horn of your own car in University City. It’s an illegal offence to sound someone else’s horn.

On the highway in Utah, make sure you give way if you see a bird in the road. All birds have legal right of way in the state.

France

France has some truly wonderful roads you can enjoy, but as in any country, you must not drink and drive. However, in France, it’s also a law that you must also carry a breathalyser in your vehicle.
