Headed out on a road trip doesn’t always make it easy to make healthy choices. Motorway service stations are full of takeaway food and when you’re driving long distance, there is little chance to exercise.
To help you make smart choices on your next journey, take a look at our healthy road trip tips.
Avoid caffeine
You might think that caffeine will help you keep alert on your journey. But the quick buzz of that coffee will mask how tired you really are, and driver fatigue can be very dangerous. Instead, drink water to keep yourself properly hydrated and energised.
Watch your posture
Whether you’re the driver or the passenger, make sure you maintain a decent posture. Slumping leads to back pain and can actually have an impact on your mood and energy levels. Sitting upright can help keep you alert and feeling good about your drive.
Take regular breaks
The signs on the motorway aren’t wrong, tiredness can kill. Make sure you’re taking regular breaks on long journeys to keep yourself sharp and focused on the road. While you’re out of the vehicle, make sure to move your body, take a walk, stretch yourself out, or do something to get raise your heartbeat to give yourself more energy.
Plan your snacks
Planning your meals and snacks in advance helps you make smart choices about what you’re going to eat. We’re not saying don’t treat yourself, but if you travel a lot, having fried food at every stop will take its toll…

Put on sun cream
The glass in your windows do nothing to protect your skin from the sun’s rays. If you’re travelling a lot in sunny weather, make sure you regularly apply sun cream to avoid burns.
Keep the vehicle neat
Being surrounded by rubbish and clutter does not make for a healthy, happy trip. Make sure you use the bins at services when you stop, recycling as much as you can for greater sustainability!
