Rental car return checklist

Whatever reason you hired a vehicle for, at some point you’ll have to return it to the hirer. Following our car rental drop off checklist will make the process simple and hassle free.

Take a look at our 5 reminders for when you return your hire car.

  1. Fill it up

You’ll have agreed with your hirer how much fuel needs to be in the tank when you return it. Make sure you top up to that amount before you return your borrowed vehicle. That way, there will be no quibbles with your hirer and you won’t run the risk of having to pay extra for them having to refill it.

Check out our tips for maximising fuel economy here.

  1. Remove all your things

You don’t want to accidentally leave anything important behind in your hire vehicle. Make sure you leave enough time to clean out the vehicle of any items or rubbish before you return it.

  1. Wash the vehicle

No matter how well you’ve looked after your hire, vehicles do get dirty from the roads. Cleaning the vehicle before you return it will make it much easier to do the post-hire inspection. You can clearly show there’s been no damage to it under your care.

  1. Inspect it yourself

It’s always advisable to take pictures of a hire vehicle on the day you collect it and the day you return it. Your post-hire inspection allows you to be confident that the vehicle is in the same great condition you hired it in.

  1. Hand the keys back to the team

Lots of hire companies offer an out of hours drop off to be more convenient for their customers. However, you get additional confidence that all the boxes have been ticked if you hand the keys to a member of staff. They’ll carry out the returns procedure while you’re there.

We hope this car rental drop off checklist gives you the confidence to book any vehicle you might need. If you want to talk to our team about your vehicle hire needs, please get in touch. The Meashams team are waiting for your call.
