Times are tough right now, but that’s not going to stop us from having a good time! Travel doesn’t have to be expensive, and there are lots of things that you can do to keep costs down while getting loads of new experiences.
Take a look at our money saving travel tips and start planning your next getaway.
Choose somewhere off the tourist track
If you’re going somewhere really touristy, it’s going to be more expensive. Pick somewhere for your road trip that’s not on the typical tourist map and you’ll find that things are a lot cheaper while you’re there!
Avoid holidays and special days
If you can, travel outside of the school holidays. When the kids are off, prices for everything shoot up. The same is true of bank holidays. Sure, we’re all delighted by the extra day off, but businesses tend to raise their prices one these days too. If you want to keep costs down, pick your travel time carefully.

Increase your fuel economy
Petrol and diesel prices have been incredibly high. While they’re coming down again now (thank goodness!) you can still use these tips to increase your fuel economy and make every penny go a little further on your journey.
Plan your activities
Once you know where you’re going, you can plan your activities. Lots of places offer discounts if you book in advance, so that’s an easy way to save.
Bring snacks with you
When you hit the road, bring along travel snacks with you. You can buy and prepare them ahead of time to save you from getting tempted by expensive, unhealthy fast food. We have lots of tips for what foods make great road trip snacks, here.

Plan your parking
Parking sites often massively overcharge for their spaces. Plan ahead of time where you’re going to leave your car when you stop. That way, you can find the cheapest places to park for your stay. You might even be able to learn about free spots for your car!
Bring reusables
Filling up a reusable water bottle will make it easier to keep hydrated on a budget. Most cafés and service stations will offer free refills. It’s also great for making your trip a little more sustainable as well as affordable. If you are going to buy hot drinks on the road, bring a reusable mug, as lots of places offer a discount to help avoid single use cups.
Research free attractions
Lots of towns and cities have plenty of free attractions you can enjoy during your stay. Once you know where you’re going, research things to do in the area. You’ll be able to find free places to visit and exciting things to see that won’t cost you to enjoy.
