The UK is bursting with beautiful scenery and exciting activities – perfect for day trips and longer holidays. Of course, we love London, but sometimes you want to get out of the city for a while. If you’re looking for something to do this summer, take a look at what we think are the best places to visit in the UK in August.
Bristol
We love a trip to Bristol! It’s especially fun in August, as the city hosts a 4 day balloon fiesta. You can watch the balloons take off at multiple points in the day, but the most special is the night glow where the balloons light up the sky set to music.
North Yorkshire Moors
In August, the heather on the North Yorkshire Moors will be in full bloom and looking beautiful. Take a trip up north and view fields bursting with purple heather. If you’re lucky, you’ll even catch a glimpse of a heritage steam train running along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. We recommend a visit to the Hole of Horcum for the best views.
Llandudno
On the Welsh coast, you’ll find Llandudno, a fantastic seaside resort with stunning Victorian architecture. It has huge beaches and lots of family friendly activities for you to enjoy. We really enjoyed the Alice in Wonderland Town Trail – so would definitely recommend you give it a try!
Edinburgh
We love a trip up to Edinburgh regardless of the time of year, but Edinburgh in August is extra special. The city is full of theatre, dance, music and comedy thanks to the world-renowned Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Lizard Point
In Cornwall, Lizard Point is the most southerly point on the British mainland. The dramatic cliffs, turquoise seas and white sandy beaches are beautiful on a hot summer’s day. There are lots of walking trails to enjoy in the Lizard Peninsula, and you stand a good chance of seeing seals, dolphins and maybe even whales in the water.
Norfolk Broads
The Norfolk Boards boast a whole range of activities the family can enjoy on hot summer’s days. Of course, hiring a boat and travelling across the waterways is a must, but we’d also recommend you check out Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden or visit the animals at Thrigby Hall.
Holy Island – Lindisfarne
Holy Island really is spectacular. On the Northumberland coast, you’ll find the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, and during low tide, you’ll be able to drive the causeway over salt marshes and mud flats. Once on the island, you can look out for the incredible wildlife who make their home there, visit the castle and priory, explore the independent shops, and lots more.
Cheddar Reservoir
You’ve likely heard of the famous Cheddar Gorge, but have you ever visited Cheddar Reservoir? If you’re up to the driving challenge of the gorge, head right up to this artificial reservoir for a walk this August.
