Avoiding toll roads

Nobody likes paying more than they have to for anything. That’s even more the case when you’re travelling – you want to keep the cost of the trip as low as possible. So, take a look at our tips for avoiding toll roads when you’re exploring the UK.

What are toll roads?

Toll roads are any route (road, bridge, tunnel etc.) that you have to pay a charge to use. These were introduced as a way to help pay for the maintenance of the road.

Often, the price you pay to cross varies depending on the weight of the vehicle you’re in. All toll roads will have prices available to see before you set off on your journey, so you’ll know what you can expect to pay if you do use the toll road.

Avoiding toll roads using alternative routes

Most sat navs let you programme your route to avoid tolls. It really can be as simple as that! Just make sure it’s not adding too many more miles to your journey. If that happens, you’ll likely spend more in fuel than the toll would have cost you, and not actually save anything!

If you’re using Google maps on your smartphone, simply set your destination and go into the route options in the drop down to the right of ‘your location’. You can then select the ‘avoid tolls’ route option. Sorted!

If you’re using a desktop, the process is very similar to mobiles. Set your destination and rather than looking for the three dots indicating a dropdown, you’ll be able to click a button called ‘options’. Once you’ve opened this menu, you can select to avoid tolls on the route.
