The 6 Most Scenic Drives in the UK

We are really lucky to have such varied and stunning scenery across Britain! The best (and quickest) way to see them all is on a relaxing drive. Whether you’re looking for a multi-day trek across coastal highway or scenic drives conquered in an afternoon in the UK, we’ve got you covered.

The Atlantic Highway

The Atlantic Highway is one of the more remote motorways in the UK, but also one of the most beautiful. Don’t let the name fool you, most of the drive features lush green farmland and fields. Occasionally, however, you’ll get a peak of the sea. The most scenic 70 miles is the stretch from Barnstaple, Devon to Newquay, Cornwall.

On your journey, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop by quaint fishing villages for a delicious meal and paddle in the ocean before getting back to the road. One must-see destination along your journey is Tintagel Castle where the legend of King Arthur supposedly found its origins. This coastal adventure is one of legend!

St. Ives to St. Just

The 17 miles of the Tin Coast from St Ives to St Just (B3306) largely features hilly patchwork fields. The drive gives you several occasions to marvel at the rugged coastline with peaks of blue sea and dramatic views. Take advantage of your proximity to some of the mines that make up Cornwall’s history, like Levant Mine and Beam Engine, a Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

Cheddar Gorge

The drive through Cheddar Gorge being on “the most scenic drives in Britain” was inevitable. The Cheddar Gorge, named after the nearby cheese-producing village of Cheddar, cuts through the Mendip Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The 14 miles will wind you through the limestone pass, each side surrounded by the gorge. Stop by one of the quaint Somerset villages nearby for a cuppa and take in the countryside views.

Black Mountain Road

Starting your trek from Llandovery, the journey to Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen gives you plenty of opportunities to pull over and take photos. Just off the A40, stop by the Llandovery Castle ruins for more dramatic snaps for the scrapbook (or Instagram).

Like many of these scenic roads, the twists and turns that inspire awe are also what makes them dangerous. The stunning beauty of the Black Mountain Road on the A4069 in Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales is no exception to this trend. The rolling hills and winding roads are part of the charm, and would you really be paying a visit to Wales without seeing some grazing sheep?

Cat and Fiddle

The road crossing the Peak District from Buxton to Macclesfield (A54 to A437) is more affectionately known as the Cat and Fiddle road. Nicknamed after a local pub, this unique stretch of road is one of spectacular beauty. Don’t let the gorgeous scenery of rolling hills populated by sheep, dry stone fences, and babbling streams fool you, it has also been dubbed one of the most dangerous roads in the UK. While you’re enjoying the views, be sure to practice safe, defensive driving as you’ll be sharing narrow roads with motorhomes, cyclists, bikers and other motorists. At its best in good weather, the road closes in inclement weather for safety. Be sure to check the forecast before plotting out your route.

Snake Pass

Traverse the Pennines on this 20-mile drive of the A57, full of twists, turns, and views. These highlights are what make it a popular route for bikers, so be vigilant while sharing the road. For an even more impactful view, plan your drive for late summer where the heather will paint the hills purple. When at peak elevation on a clear day, you can admire huge swaths of land looking down into the valley. Like the drive through the Cat and Fiddle, the slopes make the road dangerous in inclement weather so park authorities will close it off in such conditions.
